The I-26 Fixed Guideway Analysis will develop a regional transit plan to support the needs of the I-26 corridor in the short term as well as identify a locally preferred fixed guideway alternative in the long range to move forward into the FTA’s Capital Investment Program.
1. Comprehensive Analysis of Regional Transit
The I-26 Corridor from Summerville to Downtown Charleston is the primary corridor in the region and is served by both Charleston Area Regional Transit Authority (CARTA) and TriCounty Link. This study will look comprehensively at CARTA’s operations and capital needs to make recommendations to serve the corridor more efficiently in the short-term (0-10 years) and more effectively with a fixed guideway alternative in the long term (10-20 years).
2. Fixed Guideway Analysis
The fixed guideway analysis will evaluate and screen transit alternatives through 1) an analysis of potential transit alignments to serve the corridor, and 2) the selection of transit modes that can successfully operate along each alignment and 3) a station area planning process to identify potential station locations and transit oriented development opportunities.
3. Prepare project to enter Project Development
Upon completion of the I-26 Fixed Guideway Analysis, a locally preferred alternative will be selected and evaluated to determine the next steps to move forward into FTA’s Capital Investment Program Project Development phase.
